Fall Equinox: Finding Balance as We Enter a Season of Letting Go
There is something about the arrival of fall that naturally invites us to slow down.
The air begins to cool. The days become shorter. The leaves start to change, reminding us that nature is always moving through cycles of growth, release, rest, and renewal.
The Fall Equinox marks the transition from summer into autumn, a time when day and night come close to equal length. It can be a beautiful reminder of balance, not only around us, but within us.
After the bright, active, outward energy of summer, fall begins to gently draw us inward.
It asks us to pause.
To ground.
To reflect.
And perhaps to notice what we are ready to let go of.
Finding Balance Within
When we think about balance, we often imagine everything being perfectly even.
But balance does not always mean giving equal energy to every part of our lives.
Sometimes balance means recognizing what we need in this moment.
There may be seasons when we need movement and seasons when we need rest. Times when we feel called to connect with others and times when we need quiet. Moments when we are creating and expanding, and others when we need to simply be.
Yoga teaches us this beautifully.
Our practice is not always about doing more or going deeper. Sometimes the practice is learning when to soften. When to breathe. When to listen to the body instead of pushing through.
The Fall Equinox gives us an opportunity to check in with ourselves and ask:
Where could I invite a little more balance into my life?
Maybe you have been constantly giving and need to receive.
Maybe your schedule has been full and your body is asking for rest.
Maybe you have been holding onto something that no longer feels aligned with who you are becoming.
There is no right answer.
Simply noticing is enough.
The Season of Letting Go
One of my favourite lessons from fall is the reminder that letting go is part of the natural cycle of life.
The trees do not hold onto every leaf.
They release what they no longer need and create space for the next season.
We can allow ourselves to do the same.
Letting go does not always have to mean something dramatic. Sometimes it is releasing an expectation. A habit. A thought pattern. A commitment that no longer feels supportive.
It may even be releasing the pressure to have everything figured out.
There can be so much freedom in allowing ourselves to put something down.
Take a moment and ask yourself:
What am I carrying that feels heavy?
What am I ready to release?
What would create more space in my life if I allowed myself to let it go?
You do not have to force an answer. Allow whatever comes forward naturally.
Grounding Into the Energy of Fall
As the season changes, grounding practices can help us feel more connected to ourselves and the present moment.
Grounding does not have to be complicated.
It can be as simple as stepping outside and feeling your feet on the earth.
Taking a few slow breaths.
Sitting quietly with a warm cup of tea.
Moving through a gentle yoga practice.
Placing your hands over your heart or belly and giving yourself a few moments of Reiki or quiet presence.
Even a few intentional minutes can help bring us back into our bodies.
One simple breath practice you can try is to breathe in slowly through the nose, allowing the belly and ribs to gently expand.
Then exhale slowly and completely.
As you breathe out, imagine releasing anything that feels heavy or no longer belongs with you.
Continue for a few rounds, allowing each exhale to soften the body a little more.
A Simple Fall Equinox Ritual
You do not need anything elaborate to honour the change of season.
Create a quiet space where you can be undisturbed for a few minutes. You may choose to light a candle, hold a favourite crystal, or simply sit somewhere that feels peaceful.
Close your eyes and take a few slow breaths.
Notice how your body feels.
Notice your energy.
Notice anything that has been taking up space in your thoughts lately.
Then reflect on these questions:
What am I grateful for from the season that has passed?
What am I ready to release as I move into fall?
Where do I need more balance in my life?
What do I want to make space for this season?
How do I want to feel as I move through the months ahead?
You can write your answers in a journal or simply sit with them quietly.
When you are ready, choose one word or intention to carry with you into the new season.
Maybe it is:
Grounded.
Rest.
Trust.
Balance.
Release.
Presence.
Softness.
Let your intention be something that feels supportive rather than something else you need to accomplish.
A Few Crystals for Fall Energy
If you enjoy incorporating crystals into your practice, fall can be a beautiful time to work with grounding and supportive stones.
Smoky Quartz can be used as a grounding stone and as a reminder to release what you no longer wish to carry.
Black Tourmaline is often used with the intention of grounding and energetic protection.
Carnelian carries a warm energy that can support creativity, confidence, and motivation as the seasons shift.
Red Jasper is often associated with grounding, stability, and connection to the earth.
You may choose to hold a crystal during meditation, place one beside you while journaling, or simply keep one somewhere you will see it throughout the day.
There is no perfect way to work with crystals. Let your own intuition guide you.
Moving Into Fall With Intention
Nature is constantly reminding us that we are allowed to change.
We are allowed to slow down.
We are allowed to release.
And we are allowed to begin again.
The Fall Equinox does not need to be another date on the calendar that requires a perfect ritual or practice.
It can simply be a moment to pause.
To notice where you are.
To honour what you have moved through.
To appreciate what is present.
And to create a little space for whatever comes next.
As we move into this new season, maybe the invitation is not to add more.
Maybe it is to soften.
To listen.
To let go of what feels heavy.
And to find a little more balance in the space between doing and simply being.
Wishing you a beautiful, grounded, and peaceful start to fall.
With love,
Kat
