Full Moon Rituals for Release, Reflection, and Renewal
There is something so powerful about the energy of the full moon.
It is bright, full, and illuminating. It has a way of bringing things to the surface. Emotions, thoughts, patterns, old stories, and even parts of ourselves that we may have been too busy to notice.
The full moon is often seen as a time of completion. A time to pause, reflect, and release what no longer feels aligned. It does not have to be dramatic or overly complicated. A full moon ritual can be simple, gentle, and deeply personal.
You do not need to do anything perfectly. You do not need a long list of tools or a certain way of practicing. The intention is to create space. Space to listen. Space to soften. Space to come back to yourself.
What the Full Moon Represents
The moon moves through cycles, just like we do.
There are seasons of beginning, growing, expanding, completing, releasing, and resting. The full moon reminds us that we are not meant to stay the same all the time. We are allowed to shift. We are allowed to outgrow. We are allowed to let go.
The full moon can be a beautiful time to ask yourself:
What feels complete?
What am I ready to release?
What am I holding that no longer feels like mine?
Where am I being invited to soften?
Sometimes release looks like letting go of a belief, a habit, an expectation, or an old version of yourself. Sometimes it looks like creating space in your home, your body, your schedule, or your energy.
Release does not have to be forceful. It can be a gentle exhale.
Creating a Simple Full Moon Ritual
A full moon ritual can be as simple as lighting a candle, taking a few deep breaths, and journaling for five minutes.
You can make it your own. Let it feel supportive, not stressful.
Here is a simple ritual you can try at home.
1. Create a Sacred Space
Start by choosing a quiet space where you feel comfortable.
This could be your yoga mat, your meditation cushion, your bedroom, or even a small corner of your home. You may want to light a candle, dim the lights, play soft music, or place a few meaningful items nearby.
You could include:
A candle
Crystals
A journal
Oracle or tarot cards
A cup of tea
Flowers or something from nature
A blanket or pillow
Let this space feel like an invitation to slow down.
Before beginning, you can cleanse the space if that feels good to you. This could be through smoke, sound, Reiki energy, or simply by setting the intention that this space is held with peace, clarity, and protection.
2. Ground Into Your Body
Before you begin reflecting or releasing, take a few moments to ground.
Sit or lie down comfortably. Feel the points of contact beneath you. Notice where your body is being supported by the earth.
Begin to notice your breath.
You do not need to change it right away. Just notice it.
Notice the breath coming in.
Notice the breath leaving.
Allow each exhale to become a little softer.
You might place one hand on your heart and one hand on your belly. Let your hands remind you that you are here, you are safe, and you are allowed to take this moment for yourself.
3. Reflect Through Journaling
Journaling during the full moon can help bring awareness to what is ready to be seen.
Try not to overthink your answers. Let them come through gently and honestly.
Here are a few full moon journaling prompts:
What has this past cycle taught me?
What am I ready to release?
What feels heavy in my body, mind, or energy?
Where have I been giving too much of myself?
What am I no longer available for?
What am I grateful for?
What part of me needs more compassion right now?
What am I ready to make space for?
You may want to write freely for a few minutes, or choose one prompt that speaks to you.
There is no right or wrong way to journal. Sometimes one sentence is enough.
4. Practice Gentle Movement
The full moon can bring up a lot of energy, so gentle movement can be a beautiful way to move through emotion and reconnect with your body.
You could try a few slow yoga postures such as:
Child’s pose
Cat and cow
Low lunge
Seated forward fold
Reclined twist
Supported bridge
Legs up the wall
Savasana
Let the practice be soft. Move slowly. Let the breath lead.
You may even set the intention that with each exhale, you are releasing something that feels heavy or no longer needed.
This is not about pushing, performing, or trying to fix yourself. This is about creating room to feel, breathe, and soften.
5. Work With Crystals
Crystals can be beautiful tools to use during a full moon ritual.
You can hold one during meditation, place one on your altar, keep one near your journal, or rest one near your mat during practice.
Some crystals that pair well with full moon energy are:
Selenite for cleansing and clarity
Moonstone for intuition and feminine energy
Clear quartz for amplification and intention
Amethyst for calm, spiritual connection, and inner wisdom
Labradorite for transformation and protection
Rose quartz for compassion and heart healing
Black tourmaline for grounding and energetic protection
The full moon is also a lovely time to charge crystals in the moonlight. You can place them on a windowsill or somewhere safe outdoors. Just be mindful that some crystals are sensitive to water or direct sunlight, so always check what is safe for each stone.
You can also charge your crystals with Reiki energy, intention, or by placing your hands around them and visualizing them being filled with light.
6. Release With Intention
Once you have reflected, you may feel called to release something with intention.
You can write down what you are ready to let go of on a small piece of paper. This could be a pattern, belief, fear, emotion, or expectation.
For example:
I release the need to carry what is not mine.
I release the pressure to do everything perfectly.
I release the belief that I have to earn rest.
I release what no longer supports my healing.
After writing it down, take a deep breath. Read it to yourself, either out loud or silently.
Then choose a safe way to complete the release. You might tear up the paper, place it in a bowl, or simply close your journal and trust that the intention has been set.
The ritual is not about forcing something out of you. It is about acknowledging what is ready to shift.
7. Close With Renewal
After release, it is important to come back to softness.
You may want to place your hands over your heart and take a few slow breaths.
Ask yourself:
What do I want to call in?
What energy do I want to return to?
How can I support myself moving forward?
You might choose one simple intention for the next cycle.
Something like:
I choose peace.
I trust my timing.
I allow myself to soften.
I honour my energy.
I am open to renewal.
Let this intention feel supportive and realistic. Something you can return to in your breath, your yoga practice, or your daily life.
A Gentle Reminder
Full moon rituals do not have to be big or complicated to be meaningful.
Sometimes the most powerful ritual is simply pausing long enough to notice what your body, heart, and energy have been trying to tell you.
The full moon gives us permission to reflect. To honour what has been. To let go of what feels complete. To create space for what is ready to grow.
You are allowed to release gently.
You are allowed to begin again.
You are allowed to move through your own cycles with compassion, softness, and trust.
