Reiki and the Chakras: How Energy Healing and the Energy Body Connect
You may have heard people talk about Reiki and the chakras in the same conversation and wondered how they are connected.
Are they the same thing? Does Reiki open the chakras? Can a Reiki practitioner tell when a chakra is blocked?
Reiki and the chakra system come from different traditions, but many modern energy practitioners choose to work with both. Each offers a way of understanding the energy body and becoming more aware of what we may be holding physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually.
For me, Reiki and chakra awareness are not about searching for something that is wrong with you. They are about slowing down, listening inward, and creating space for your energy to move toward greater balance.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle Japanese energy healing practice that supports relaxation, rest, and energetic balance.
During a Reiki session, you remain fully clothed while resting comfortably on a treatment table. Reiki is offered through light, non-invasive touch or with the practitioner's hands held slightly above the body. Touch is always optional.
There is nothing you need to do during the treatment. You do not have to meditate, concentrate, or understand energy work. You are simply invited to rest and receive.
People often seek Reiki when they are feeling stressed, emotionally overwhelmed, energetically drained, disconnected from themselves, or in need of a quiet space to soften.
Every Reiki experience is different. Some people notice warmth, coolness, tingling, heaviness, lightness, colours, memories, emotions, or a deep feeling of calm. Others fall asleep or feel very little during the treatment but notice a shift afterward.
There is no correct way to experience Reiki.
What Are the Chakras?
The chakras are part of traditional yogic understandings of the subtle or energetic body. The word chakra is often translated as wheel or spinning centre.
Although different traditions describe the energy body in different ways, the system most commonly used in modern yoga and wellness includes seven main chakras. These energy centres are often explored from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.
Each chakra is connected symbolically with different qualities, emotions, areas of awareness, and aspects of our human experience.
The seven main chakras are:
Root Chakra, connected with grounding, safety, stability, and belonging
Sacral Chakra, connected with emotions, creativity, pleasure, and flow
Solar Plexus Chakra, connected with confidence, motivation, and personal power
Heart Chakra, connected with love, compassion, grief, and connection
Throat Chakra, connected with communication, truth, and authentic expression
Third Eye Chakra, connected with intuition, insight, and inner wisdom
Crown Chakra, connected with spiritual awareness, meaning, and a sense of connection beyond ourselves
The chakras are not physical organs, and they cannot be evaluated in the same way as a medical condition. They offer a spiritual and reflective framework for noticing patterns within ourselves.
You may recognize that one area of your life feels supported while another feels tender, overworked, or difficult to access. Chakra awareness can give us language for exploring those experiences with curiosity rather than judgment.
How Do Reiki and the Chakras Work Together?
Reiki does not require chakra work. A Reiki treatment can be offered without naming, analyzing, or focusing on the chakras at all.
However, because Reiki is an energy-based practice, chakra awareness can offer an additional lens through which a practitioner notices the energy body.
During a Reiki session, I may feel drawn to spend more time around a certain area. I may notice warmth, tingling, pulsing, heaviness, spaciousness, or another subtle sensation in my hands. I may also receive an intuitive impression, colour, image, emotion, or message connected with that part of the body.
This does not mean that I am diagnosing a blocked chakra or deciding what is happening within you. It is simply information that may gently guide the session.
Sometimes the area that draws attention seems to connect with what the client has already shared. At other times, an impression may not make sense until we speak afterward. Some sensations may simply be part of the energetic experience and do not need to be analyzed.
My intention is never to force energy or make a chakra behave in a certain way. Reiki is offered gently, allowing the body and energy to receive what feels supportive in that moment.
Root Chakra: Grounding and Safety
The Root Chakra is located symbolically at the base of the spine and is connected with safety, stability, belonging, and our relationship with the physical world.
When life feels uncertain, stressful, or constantly busy, you may feel scattered, restless, fearful, or disconnected from your body. You may find it difficult to slow down because your system feels as though it needs to remain alert.
Reiki around the feet, legs, hips, or base of the body may feel especially grounding. The intention is not to force a sense of safety, but to offer the body a quiet opportunity to settle and feel supported.
You might pair Root Chakra work with slow breathing, time in nature, warm nourishing food, gentle movement, or grounding crystals such as smoky quartz, red jasper, hematite, or black tourmaline.
Sacral Chakra: Emotion, Creativity, and Flow
The Sacral Chakra is connected with the lower abdomen and pelvis. It is often associated with emotions, creativity, pleasure, relationships, and our ability to move with the natural changes of life.
There may be times when emotions feel stuck, overwhelming, or difficult to express. You may also notice periods when your creativity feels distant or when it is hard to receive joy without guilt.
Reiki offered around the lower abdomen or hips may support a sense of softness and emotional spaciousness. This area can feel vulnerable for some people, so consent, comfort, and the option for completely hands-off Reiki are especially important.
Sacral Chakra practices might include gentle hip movements, journaling, creative expression, time near water, or working with carnelian or moonstone.
Solar Plexus Chakra: Confidence and Personal Power
The Solar Plexus Chakra is connected symbolically with the upper abdomen. It is associated with confidence, motivation, boundaries, self-trust, and our relationship with personal power.
When this area feels tender, you may notice self-doubt, difficulty making decisions, people pleasing, perfectionism, or the feeling that you need to prove yourself.
Reiki around the upper abdomen may be experienced as warmth or a gentle settling. The intention can be to reconnect with your inner strength without pushing, forcing, or demanding more from yourself.
Supportive practices may include standing yoga poses, mindful core connection, affirmations, clear boundaries, or crystals such as citrine, tiger's eye, or yellow calcite.
Heart Chakra: Love, Grief, and Compassion
The Heart Chakra is located symbolically at the centre of the chest. It is connected with love, compassion, forgiveness, grief, and our ability to give and receive care.
Our hearts can hold many experiences at once. Love and grief can exist together. Compassion can live beside disappointment. We can feel deeply connected while also needing protection and boundaries.
Reiki around the heart space may feel soothing, emotional, warm, or expansive. Some people notice tears arising, even when they did not expect to feel emotional. Tears do not mean anything has gone wrong. They may simply be part of allowing the body to soften and release.
Heart Chakra practices can include placing a hand over the heart, practising gentle chest opening, spending time with someone who feels safe, or working with rose quartz, green aventurine, or rhodonite.
Throat Chakra: Truth and Expression
The Throat Chakra is associated with communication, listening, truth, and authentic expression.
This area may feel relevant when you have been holding back your words, avoiding a necessary conversation, saying yes when you mean no, or struggling to express what you need.
Reiki around the throat, shoulders, jaw, or upper chest may invite softening in an area where many of us carry tension. Hands can always remain above the body, particularly around the throat, so the experience continues to feel comfortable and respectful.
Supportive Throat Chakra practices might include humming, singing, journaling, speaking an affirmation aloud, or working with blue lace agate, sodalite, or aquamarine.
Third Eye Chakra: Intuition and Inner Wisdom
The Third Eye Chakra is connected symbolically with the space between the eyebrows. It is associated with intuition, insight, imagination, and our ability to look beyond the surface of a situation.
Intuition does not always arrive as a dramatic vision or clear message. It may feel like a quiet knowing, a sensation in the body, a repeated thought, a dream, or a gentle pull in a certain direction.
Reiki around the forehead or head may feel calming and spacious. Some people notice colours, images, memories, or a dreamlike state. Others simply experience a quieter mind.
Third Eye Chakra practices can include meditation, dream journaling, time away from screens, or working with amethyst, labradorite, or lapis lazuli.
Crown Chakra: Spiritual Connection and Meaning
The Crown Chakra is associated with the top of the head and our connection with spirit, universal consciousness, meaning, and something greater than ourselves.
This connection can look different for every person. It may be experienced through faith, nature, meditation, prayer, creativity, community, or quiet moments of awe.
Reiki around the crown may feel light, spacious, peaceful, or deeply still. For some people, this is also where intuitive or spiritual impressions arise during a session.
Crown Chakra practices may include meditation, prayer, silence, time beneath the open sky, or working with clear quartz, selenite, or amethyst.
Spiritual awareness is most supportive when it is paired with grounding. We do not need to leave the body to connect with spirit. We can feel our feet on the earth while remaining open to something greater.
Do Chakras Become Blocked?
The word blocked is often used when talking about chakras, but it can make our energy sound more rigid than it really is.
Our energy naturally changes. Stress, grief, relationships, sleep, health, hormones, major transitions, and everyday experiences can all influence how connected, expressive, grounded, or open we feel.
Rather than deciding that a chakra is bad, closed, or broken, I prefer to approach the energy body with curiosity.
You might ask:
Where am I feeling supported right now?
Where am I holding tension or heaviness?
What emotion may need space to be felt?
Where am I giving away too much of my energy?
What part of me is asking for care, expression, rest, or grounding?
Your energy is not something you need to perfect. It is something you can learn to listen to.
What Might You Experience During Chakra-Focused Reiki?
Every person responds differently. During or after Reiki, you may notice:
Warmth, coolness, or tingling
A feeling of heaviness or lightness
Gentle pulsing or waves of energy
Colours, images, memories, or intuitive impressions
Emotional release
Deep relaxation or sleepiness
Greater awareness of a certain part of the body
A feeling of being calmer, clearer, or more grounded
Very little sensation at all
You do not need to feel each chakra, see a particular colour, or have a powerful spiritual experience for the session to be meaningful.
Sometimes the most supportive experience is simply resting in a quiet space where nothing is expected of you.
Intuitive Messages and Chakra Awareness
During some Reiki sessions, I may receive intuitive, psychic, or mediumistic impressions. A chakra may bring forward a colour, emotion, memory, symbol, word, or message that seems connected with what you are moving through.
These impressions are never treated as absolute truth or a medical diagnosis. They are offered gently as points of reflection, and you are always encouraged to take what resonates and leave what does not.
You also have a choice about whether you would like intuitive messages shared. Some people enjoy talking during or after their session, while others prefer to rest quietly and simply receive the Reiki.
Both experiences are welcome.
A Simple Chakra and Self-Reiki Practice
You can explore Reiki and chakra awareness at home without making the practice complicated.
Find a comfortable seated or lying position. Place one hand over your heart and the other over your lower belly.
Close your eyes if that feels comfortable and begin to notice your breath.
Ask yourself:
Where in my body is asking for my attention today?
Let your hands move naturally to that area, or keep them where they are. Imagine your breath creating a little more space around anything you are feeling.
You may visualize a colour, repeat an affirmation, hold a crystal, or simply remain quiet.
Stay for five to ten minutes, allowing yourself to receive without trying to create a particular result.
When you are ready to close, take a slow breath and repeat:
I honour the wisdom of my body.
I allow my energy to move toward balance with gentleness and ease.
Reiki as a Complementary Practice
Reiki and chakra work can be beautiful additions to your wellness and spiritual practices, but they are not replacements for medical care, mental health support, or professional treatment.
Energy work does not diagnose illness, and physical or emotional symptoms should not automatically be attributed to a chakra. If something feels persistent, concerning, or disruptive to your daily life, connect with an appropriate health care professional.
You can care for your physical, emotional, and energetic well-being together. One does not need to replace the other.
A Gentle Invitation to Reconnect
Reiki and the chakras offer us a way to become curious about the parts of ourselves that may be asking for support.
Not so we can fix ourselves.
Not so we can become perfectly balanced.
But so we can listen more closely, soften where we have been holding, and reconnect with our own inner wisdom.
If you have been feeling emotionally heavy, energetically drained, disconnected, or simply in need of deep rest, I would be honoured to hold space for you.
I offer 90-minute intuitive Reiki sessions from my peaceful home treatment space in Hagersville. Each session includes an opening conversation and card pull, 60 minutes of Reiki, and time afterward to reflect and receive a final card. Intuitive or spiritual messages may also be shared with your consent if they arise naturally during the session.
You do not need to understand the chakras or have any experience with energy healing. You are welcome to arrive exactly as you are.

Love and light,
Kat
