Reiki vs. Mediumship: What’s the Difference and Can They Happen Together?

Reiki and mediumship are both connected to energy, intuition and spiritual awareness, but they are not the same practice.

Because I offer intuitive Reiki, communicate with spirits through mediumship and may also receive psychic or intuitive messages during a session, I understand that some people may wonder how these parts of my work fit together. You may be curious about whether a Reiki session is also a mediumship reading, whether a loved one in spirit will come through or what kind of messages you might receive.

The simple answer is that Reiki and mediumship can gently come together, but the intention of a Reiki session is always to support you through rest, relaxation and energetic balance. Any intuitive or spiritual messages that arise are an additional part of the experience, not something that is forced or guaranteed.

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle energy healing practice that encourages relaxation, rest and energetic balance. During a Reiki session, you remain fully clothed while resting comfortably on a treatment table. Reiki may be offered through light touch, with your permission, or with my hands held just above the body.

There is nothing you need to do during the treatment. You do not need to understand energy, know how to meditate or have any previous spiritual experience. You are simply invited to rest and receive.

People are often drawn to Reiki when they feel stressed, emotionally heavy, overwhelmed, energetically drained or disconnected from themselves. Others may come because they are moving through a change, processing grief or simply craving a peaceful space where they can slow down.

Every Reiki experience is different. You may notice warmth, coolness, tingling, heaviness, lightness, colours, images or emotions. You may feel deeply relaxed or drift in and out of sleep. You may also feel very little during the treatment and notice a shift afterward.

There is no correct way to experience Reiki. You are welcome to arrive exactly as you are.

What Is Mediumship?

For me, mediumship is how I communicate with spirits and receive information or messages from loved ones who have passed.

A medium may receive information in different ways. This could include seeing an image in the mind, hearing a word or phrase, feeling an emotion or physical sensation, sensing a presence or simply knowing something without understanding where the information came from.

These different ways of receiving are sometimes called the clairs. For example, clairvoyance refers to clear seeing, clairaudience to clear hearing, clairsentience to clear feeling and claircognizance to clear knowing.

For me, spirit communication is approached with respect, compassion and clear intention. I open myself only to loving and supportive connections that are for the highest good of the person receiving the message.

Mediumship is not about predicting every detail of the future or having all the answers. It is about receiving what comes forward and sharing it as honestly and gently as possible.

What Are Psychic or Intuitive Impressions?

Psychic or intuitive impressions are a little different from mediumship. Mediumship involves communicating with spirits, while psychic or intuitive messages may relate to your own energy, emotions, relationships or current experiences.

Intuitive information may relate to your own energy, emotions or current experiences rather than coming from a loved one in spirit. During Reiki, I may sense that a certain area of the body feels heavy, guarded, open or in need of extra attention. I may receive an image, colour, word, emotion or message connected to what you are moving through.

Sometimes the impression is clear right away. Other times it may feel symbolic and make more sense to you than it does to me. I share these impressions as gentle points of reflection, not as absolute facts or instructions.

You are always encouraged to take what resonates and leave what does not.

How Are Reiki and Mediumship Different?

The main purpose of Reiki is to offer energy healing and create space for relaxation, rest and energetic balance.

The purpose of mediumship is to communicate with spirit and share messages or evidence connected to a loved one who has passed.

A Reiki session is centred around receiving energy while resting quietly. A mediumship reading is centred more directly around spirit communication and the messages or evidence that come through.

Both practices involve sensitivity, intuition and trust, but their intentions are different.

Can Reiki and Mediumship Happen Together?

Yes, they can.

When I offer Reiki, I enter a calm, grounded and receptive state. As the energy begins to flow and the room becomes quiet, my intuitive awareness may naturally become stronger. This can make it easier for me to notice images, sensations, emotions or messages that come forward.

Sometimes the information feels connected to your own energy. Sometimes a loved one in spirit may make their presence known. Other times, the session may remain completely focused on Reiki, rest and quiet healing.

I never try to force a connection with spirit during Reiki. If a message is meant to come through, I allow it to arise naturally. The Reiki remains the foundation of the session.

Will a Loved One Come Through During My Reiki Session?

There is never a guarantee that a particular loved one, or any spirit, will come through during a Reiki session.

I understand that someone may arrive deeply hoping to hear from a certain person. That hope can come from a place of love, grief and a desire to feel close to them again. I hold that with a great deal of care.

At the same time, I cannot control who comes forward, what is shared or whether a spirit connection happens at all. I do not want anyone to feel disappointed or believe their loved one is not near them simply because a message did not come through during one session.

Sometimes Reiki offers exactly what is needed through stillness, rest and a feeling of being supported. That can be meaningful on its own.

What Happens If I Receive a Message for You?

During our conversation before the treatment begins, I will ask whether you would like me to share any messages from spirit through mediumship, as well as any psychic or intuitive messages that may come forward. You can choose not to receive messages at all, have me share them gently as they arise during the treatment or wait until the Reiki portion is complete.

There is no right or wrong choice. This is your session, and I want the experience to feel comfortable and supportive for you.

If you would like messages shared as they arise, I may gently let you know what I am sensing while I continue the Reiki treatment. You are welcome to talk with me, ask questions or share anything you are noticing in your body or energy. You are also completely welcome to close your eyes, relax quietly or drift off to sleep.

Some people enjoy being part of the conversation throughout their treatment, while others prefer to rest in silence and receive everything afterward. I will follow your lead. This is your time, and the session can unfold in the way that feels most supportive for you.

If you prefer to receive messages afterward, I will hold anything that comes forward until we have finished the Reiki portion of the treatment. Once you are fully awake, comfortable and ready to talk, I can share what I received.

I may describe an image I saw, a feeling I sensed, a word I heard or a presence I noticed. I will always be honest about how the information came to me and will not try to make something fit.

Some messages may bring immediate recognition. Others may make sense later or feel more symbolic. You are never expected to agree with everything I share.

My intention is to offer any message with compassion, respect and care.

Do I Have to Receive Intuitive or Mediumship Messages?

No. Your comfort and consent matter throughout the entire session.

I will ask about your preferences before we begin, so you never need to wonder whether messages will be shared unexpectedly. Whatever you choose will be respected, and you can change your mind at any time.

Reiki can be a quiet, personal experience. You may want space to rest without needing to talk about what arises. You may also feel more comfortable asking questions or talking as the session unfolds. Both choices are welcome.

Is an Intuitive Reiki Session the Same as a Mediumship Reading?

No. Although mediumship messages may arise during Reiki, an intuitive Reiki session is not the same as a dedicated mediumship reading.

During Reiki, most of our time is devoted to the energy treatment and allowing your body and mind to settle. Any messages that arise can be shared during the treatment or afterward as part of our closing conversation, depending on what you choose before we begin.

A dedicated mediumship reading places the connection with spirit at the centre of the experience. The intention is different, even though some of the same intuitive senses may be involved.

Understanding this difference can help you choose the type of support that feels most aligned with what you need.

Allowing the Experience to Unfold Naturally

I believe some of the most meaningful experiences happen when we release pressure and allow the session to unfold in its own way.

You do not need to arrive expecting a dramatic experience. You do not need to see colours, feel energy moving or receive a message from spirit for your Reiki session to be valuable.

You may simply feel your shoulders soften. Your breathing may become slower. Your mind may grow quieter. You may feel lighter, calmer or more connected to yourself.

If an intuitive or mediumship message comes through, it can be received as an additional layer of support. If it does not, the Reiki is still complete.

A Gentle Space for Healing and Connection

Reiki and mediumship are different practices, but they can meet each other gently within a session.

Reiki creates space for you to slow down, rest and reconnect with yourself. Intuitive impressions may offer insight into your energy or emotions. Mediumship may bring a loving message or a sense of connection with someone who has passed.

Nothing is forced. Nothing needs to happen in a particular way.

My role is to hold a warm, grounded and supportive space while honouring your comfort, your boundaries and your individual experience.

If you feel drawn to intuitive Reiki, I would be honoured to connect with you. I offer 90-minute Reiki sessions from my peaceful home treatment space in Hagersville.
