What to Expect During Your First Reiki Session
Trying something new can sometimes bring up a mix of curiosity, excitement, and uncertainty. You may feel drawn to Reiki but still wonder what actually happens during a session, what you are supposed to do, or whether you will feel anything at all.
The beautiful thing about Reiki is that you do not need to prepare in any special way. You do not need experience with energy work, meditation, or spirituality. You simply arrive as you are and allow yourself to receive.
My intention is to create a warm, supportive space where you can slow down, soften, and reconnect with yourself.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle energy healing practice that supports relaxation, rest, and energetic balance. During a session, Reiki energy is offered through light touch or by placing the hands just above the body.
Reiki is not something you need to believe in for it to be a calming experience. There is also nothing you need to do while receiving it. You are invited to rest comfortably while I guide the session with care and intention.
Many people come to Reiki because they are feeling stressed, emotionally overwhelmed, energetically drained, or disconnected from themselves. Others are simply curious and feel called to experience something new.
Every reason for coming to Reiki is welcome.
Arriving for Your Session
Your Reiki session takes place in my peaceful home treatment space in Hagersville. When you arrive, there will be time to settle in and become comfortable before we begin.
You may want to wear soft, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to relax easily. You will remain fully clothed throughout the entire treatment. There is no need to bring anything with you, although you are welcome to bring water, a journal, or a meaningful crystal if you feel called to.
My Reiki sessions are 90 minutes long. This gives us time to connect before the treatment, move through a full Reiki experience without rushing, and talk afterward about anything that may have come forward.
The Opening Conversation and Card Pull
We begin with approximately 15 minutes of conversation.
This is a chance for us to talk about how you have been feeling physically, emotionally, mentally, or energetically. You are welcome to share as much or as little as feels comfortable. You may have a specific intention for the session, or you may simply know that you need rest and support.
We will also begin with a tarot or oracle card pull. The card can offer a theme, message, or point of reflection for your session. You do not need to have a specific question prepared unless there is something you would like guidance around.
This opening time allows us to slow down and create a clear intention before beginning the Reiki treatment.
Getting Comfortable
After our conversation, you will lie comfortably on the Reiki table. Pillows and blankets can be used to help your body feel fully supported.
If lying flat is uncomfortable, we can make adjustments. Your comfort is always important, and you are welcome to let me know if you need to shift your position, use additional support, or take a break.
Once you are settled, you will be invited to close your eyes and allow your breath to soften. There is no special breathing technique or meditation you need to follow. You can simply rest.
What Happens During the Reiki Treatment?
The Reiki portion of your session lasts approximately 60 minutes.
During the treatment, I will move around the table and offer Reiki to different areas of your body. My hands may rest gently on certain areas with your permission, or they may hover slightly above your body.
If you prefer a completely hands-off treatment, please let me know. Reiki can be offered without physical touch, and your boundaries will always be respected.
The room will be kept peaceful and comfortable, allowing you to settle into the experience. You may hear soft music and notice calming elements such as crystals or gentle lighting around the space.
My role is to hold a supportive space and allow the Reiki to flow where it is needed. Your only role is to receive.
What Might You Feel During Reiki?
Every Reiki experience is different. There is no correct way to receive Reiki, and you do not need to feel anything dramatic for the session to be meaningful.
Some people experience sensations such as:
Warmth or coolness
Gentle tingling
A feeling of lightness or heaviness
Subtle waves of energy
Deep physical relaxation
Emotional release
Colours, images, memories, or intuitive impressions
A sense of peacefulness or quiet
Drifting between wakefulness and sleep
You may also fall asleep, and that is completely okay. Your body may be asking for rest.
Some people feel very little during the session but notice a shift afterward. Others have a strong emotional, physical, or intuitive experience. Both are completely valid.
Try not to place pressure on yourself to have a particular experience. Reiki meets you where you are in that moment.
Intuitive Messages During Reiki
During some sessions, I may receive intuitive impressions, messages, images, or feelings while offering Reiki. This may include noticing areas that feel energetically heavy, open, active, or in need of additional attention.
Mediumship or psychic impressions may also come forward naturally during a treatment. I approach anything I receive gently and with respect. You always have the choice of whether you would like me to share these impressions with you.
These messages are offered as points of reflection rather than absolute answers. You are encouraged to take what resonates and leave what does not.
After the Reiki Treatment
Once the Reiki portion is complete, I will gently let you know that it is time to begin returning to the room.
You will be given a moment to reconnect with your breath, notice your body, and slowly sit up when you feel ready. There is never a need to rush.
We will then spend approximately 15 minutes talking about your experience. You can share anything you noticed, felt, saw, or wondered about. I may also share intuitive impressions or areas of energy that stood out to me during the treatment.
We will close with another tarot or oracle card pull. This final card may offer a message to carry with you or bring additional meaning to your experience.
How Might You Feel After Reiki?
Many people leave Reiki feeling calm, grounded, lighter, or deeply rested. You may also feel thoughtful, emotional, energized, or ready for quiet time.
Because everyone responds differently, it can be helpful to give yourself a little space after your session. Drink water, rest if you need to, and notice how you feel over the following day or two.
You may want to journal about your experience, spend time outside, take a gentle walk, or simply allow yourself to be quiet.
There is no need to analyze every sensation or message. Sometimes the most supportive thing you can do is allow the experience to settle naturally.
Do I Need More Than One Reiki Session?
You can receive Reiki as a single experience or as part of your ongoing self-care.
Some people book a session when they are moving through a stressful or emotional time. Others return regularly because Reiki gives them a dedicated space to slow down, rest, and reconnect with themselves.
There is no required schedule. You can listen to your body, your energy, and your intuition when deciding whether another session feels right for you.
A Gentle Space to Receive
Receiving Reiki is an opportunity to pause and let yourself be supported.
You do not need to arrive feeling calm. You do not need to understand energy. You do not need to have the perfect intention. You are welcome to arrive exactly as you are.
If you have been curious about Reiki, I would be honoured to hold space for your first experience.
I offer 90-minute Reiki sessions from my home treatment space in Hagersville. Each session includes an opening conversation and card pull, 60 minutes of Reiki, and closing time to reflect and receive a final card.
