The Energy Body in Yoga: Chakras, Breath, and Awareness
When we think of yoga, we often think of the physical practice first. The shapes we make with the body. The stretches. The strengthening. The way we move from one posture to the next.
But yoga has always been so much more than physical movement.
Yoga invites us to turn inward. To notice what is happening beneath the surface. To feel the breath, the body, the mind, and the energy that moves through us.
This is where the energy body comes in.
The energy body is not something we need to overthink or fully understand before we experience it. It can be as simple as noticing how you feel when you take a deep breath. How your body softens when you feel safe. How your heart space changes when you feel supported. How your energy shifts after time on your mat.
In yoga, the energy body is often explored through the chakras, the breath, and awareness.
What Are Chakras?
Chakras are often described as energy centres in the body.
The word chakra means “wheel” in Sanskrit. You can think of each chakra as a place where energy gathers, moves, and expresses itself. There are seven main chakras that run along the centre line of the body, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.
Each chakra is connected to different themes in our lives. Things like safety, creativity, confidence, love, communication, intuition, and connection.
This does not mean you need to memorize everything or make it complicated. A chakra practice can be very simple and very grounding.
It may look like bringing your awareness to your feet and legs when you need to feel more stable.
It may look like placing your hands on your heart when you need softness and compassion.
It may look like noticing your throat and jaw when you are holding back your truth.
The chakras give us a gentle map for self-awareness. They offer language for what we may already be feeling in the body.
The Seven Main Chakras
Here is a simple introduction to the seven main chakras:
Root Chakra
Located at the base of the spine. Connected to grounding, safety, stability, and feeling supported.
Sacral Chakra
Located in the lower belly and pelvis. Connected to creativity, emotions, pleasure, and flow.
Solar Plexus Chakra
Located around the upper belly. Connected to confidence, inner strength, willpower, and self-trust.
Heart Chakra
Located at the centre of the chest. Connected to love, compassion, forgiveness, and connection.
Throat Chakra
Located at the throat. Connected to communication, truth, expression, and being heard.
Third Eye Chakra
Located between the eyebrows. Connected to intuition, inner knowing, clarity, and insight.
Crown Chakra
Located at the top of the head. Connected to spiritual connection, awareness, trust, and a sense of something greater.
Again, this is not something you need to force or perfect. The chakras are simply another way to listen.
Breath as Energy
In yoga, breath is often connected to prana.
Prana is life force energy. It is the energy that moves through all living things. We can feel it through the breath, through sensation, through warmth, through aliveness.
When we breathe with awareness, we begin to work with prana.
A shallow breath may leave us feeling tense, anxious, or disconnected. A slow, steady breath can help us feel more grounded, present, and calm.
This is one of the reasons breath is such a powerful part of yoga. It gives us a bridge between the body and the mind. It helps us come back to ourselves.
You do not need a fancy breathing technique to connect with your energy body. You can simply pause and notice:
How is my breath moving today?
Where do I feel the breath in my body?
Is my breath soft, tight, shallow, smooth, or uneven?
Can I allow my next breath to create a little more space?
These small moments of awareness can shift so much.
Awareness Is the Practice
The energy body is not about trying to fix yourself.
It is not about deciding that one chakra is “bad” or that something is wrong with you.
It is about awareness.
Awareness allows us to notice what is present without judgment. Maybe you notice heaviness in your heart. Maybe you notice tension in your belly. Maybe you notice that your breath feels stuck. Maybe you notice that you feel more grounded after a few minutes of stillness.
All of this is information.
Yoga teaches us to listen with kindness. To meet ourselves where we are. To notice the subtle layers of our experience without rushing to change them.
Sometimes awareness alone creates the shift.
Bringing the Energy Body Into Your Practice
You can begin to explore the energy body in very simple ways.
At the start of your practice, take a moment to check in. Notice your physical body first. Feel the points of contact beneath you. Then notice your breath. Then notice your energy.
You might ask yourself:
Do I feel grounded or scattered?
Do I feel open or guarded?
Do I feel energized or depleted?
Do I feel connected to myself?
From there, your practice becomes less about doing and more about listening.
A grounding practice may support the root chakra.
Gentle hip openers may connect to the sacral chakra.
Core work may bring awareness to the solar plexus.
Heart openers may soften the heart space.
Breathwork and sound may support the throat.
Stillness may connect you to intuition and inner knowing.
Meditation may support a sense of connection beyond the thinking mind.
There is no right or wrong way to begin. Start simple. Stay curious. Let the practice meet you exactly where you are.
A Gentle Practice to Try
Find a comfortable seat or lie down on your mat.
Close your eyes or soften your gaze.
Begin by noticing the parts of your body touching the ground. Let the earth hold you.
Bring one hand to your belly and one hand to your heart.
Notice your breath.
Feel the breath rise into your hands as you inhale.
Feel the body soften as you exhale.
Now gently ask yourself:
What do I need today?
Where in my body am I being called to listen?
What would support me in this moment?
Stay for a few breaths. You do not need to search for an answer. Just notice what comes through.
This is the energy body. Subtle. Quiet. Honest.
Coming Back to Yourself
The energy body reminds us that we are more than our physical body. We are breath, feeling, intuition, awareness, and presence.
Yoga gives us space to reconnect with these parts of ourselves.
Through the chakras, we can explore different layers of our inner world.
Through the breath, we can soften and steady our energy.
Through awareness, we can begin to listen more deeply.
You do not have to understand everything all at once. You do not have to make it complicated.
Your practice can begin with one breath, one moment of stillness, one gentle check-in.
The more we listen, the more we begin to understand ourselves.
And sometimes, that is the deepest practice of all.
