Root Chakra Practices for Feeling Grounded and Safe
There are seasons in life where we feel steady, supported, and connected to ourselves. There are also seasons where everything feels a little unsettled. Our mind may feel busy, our body may feel tense, and it can feel harder to fully land in the present moment.
This is where working with the root chakra can be so supportive.
The root chakra, also known as Muladhara, is connected to our sense of safety, stability, belonging, and grounding. It is often associated with the base of the spine, the legs, the feet, and our connection to the earth beneath us.
When our root energy feels balanced, we may feel more calm, centred, and supported. When it feels out of balance, we may notice feelings of fear, worry, restlessness, or feeling disconnected from the body.
Root chakra work does not have to be complicated. It can be simple, slow, and deeply nourishing. It is about coming back to the body, back to the breath, and back to the reminder that you are held.
Yoga Poses for the Root Chakra
Root chakra yoga practices are often grounding, steady, and focused on the lower body. Think feet, legs, hips, and the support of the earth.
Some supportive poses include:
Mountain Pose
Mountain pose is such a simple but powerful place to begin. Stand with your feet rooted into the floor. Feel the four corners of your feet pressing down. Allow the crown of your head to lift gently as your tailbone releases toward the earth.
You can place one hand on your heart and one hand on your lower belly and remind yourself, “I am here.”
Child’s Pose
Child’s pose is a beautiful posture for softening and surrendering. Let your body be supported by the floor. You can widen the knees or keep them closer together, depending on what feels best in your body.
With each exhale, imagine your body becoming heavier, softer, and more supported.
Warrior One
Warrior One brings strength and steadiness into the legs. It can help you feel rooted while also creating a sense of inner courage.
As you hold the pose, feel your back foot anchoring down and your front foot steady beneath you. Let the legs remind you that you are strong enough to stand where you are.
Tree Pose
Tree pose connects beautifully to the energy of the root chakra. The standing foot becomes your foundation. The lifted foot reminds you that balance does not mean being perfectly still.
Balance is a relationship. It is a practice of returning.
Squat
A squat can help open the hips and bring awareness to the pelvis and base of the body. You can sit on a block or folded blanket to make this pose more accessible.
Let the spine soften. Let the breath drop low into the body. Let yourself be supported.
Breathwork for Feeling Grounded
The breath is one of the simplest ways to come back into the present moment. When working with the root chakra, I like to keep the breath slow, steady, and calming.
Try this grounding breath practice:
Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.
Place one hand on your belly and one hand on your heart.
Inhale slowly through the nose.
Exhale gently through the nose or mouth.
As you breathe in, imagine the breath moving down through the body.
As you breathe out, imagine roots growing from your body into the earth.
You can repeat quietly:
“I am safe in this moment.”
“I am supported.”
“I am grounded.”
Stay here for 3 to 5 minutes, or as long as feels good.
This practice is not about forcing calm. It is about creating space for your body to slowly remember that it can soften.
Crystals for the Root Chakra
Crystals can be a beautiful way to bring intention into your practice. They are not something we need to overthink. They can simply act as a reminder of the energy we are calling in.
Some crystals connected to the root chakra include:
Red jasper for grounding, steadiness, and strength.
Smoky quartz for releasing heaviness and feeling more anchored.
Black tourmaline for protection and energetic boundaries.
Hematite for stability and connection to the body.
You can hold a crystal during meditation, place one near your mat, carry one in your pocket, or keep one beside your bed.
The crystal itself becomes a small reminder to pause, breathe, and return to yourself.
Journaling Prompts for the Root Chakra
Journaling is a gentle way to explore where we feel supported, where we feel unsettled, and what our body may be asking for.
Here are a few root chakra journal prompts:
What helps me feel safe and supported?
Where in my life am I craving more stability?
What does being grounded feel like in my body?
What routines or rituals help me feel more connected to myself?
Where do I need to create stronger boundaries?
What am I ready to release so I can feel more rooted?
What would it look like to trust myself more deeply?
You do not need to answer all of these at once. Choose one that speaks to you and let the writing unfold without judgment.
Daily Rituals to Support Grounding
Root chakra work can be woven into everyday life. It does not have to be a full yoga practice or a long meditation. Sometimes the smallest rituals are the ones that support us the most.
You might try:
Taking a slow walk outside.
Standing barefoot on the earth.
Making a warm cup of tea and drinking it without rushing.
Tidying one small area of your home.
Preparing a nourishing meal.
Taking three grounding breaths before starting your day.
Placing your hand on your heart before bed and saying, “I am safe to rest.”
These little moments remind the nervous system that it does not always have to be bracing, rushing, or holding everything together.
Grounding is not about having everything figured out. It is about finding small ways to come back to yourself.
A Gentle Root Chakra Practice
If you want to create a simple root chakra practice at home, try this:
Begin lying on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor.
Take a few slow breaths and feel the support beneath you.
Move into wind relieving pose, one side at a time.
Come to tabletop and take a few slow cat and cow movements.
Rest in child’s pose.
Come to standing and find mountain pose.
Move slowly into Warrior One on each side.
Practice tree pose on each side.
Return to the floor for a supported squat or seated forward fold.
End lying down with one hand on your belly and one hand on your heart.
Let the whole practice be slow and steady. Let it feel like a return, not a performance.
Coming Back to Safety Within
The root chakra invites us to remember our foundation.
It reminds us that we are allowed to slow down. We are allowed to need support. We are allowed to create safety in small, gentle ways.
Feeling grounded does not mean life is perfect. It means we have practices that help us come back home to ourselves, even when life feels uncertain.
Your breath can be a place of return.
Your body can be a place of wisdom.
The earth can be a place of support.
And you are allowed to feel held.
