The Third Eye Chakra: Intuition, Inner Wisdom, and Learning to Trust Yourself
The third eye chakra is one of those energy centres that can feel a little mystical at first, but it is really connected to something we all experience in our own way.
That quiet inner knowing.
That feeling when something feels aligned, even if you cannot fully explain why.
That soft voice within you that gently guides you back to yourself.
The third eye chakra, also known as Ajna, is located between the eyebrows. It is often connected to intuition, clarity, insight, imagination, and inner wisdom. When we work with this chakra, we are not trying to force anything open or search for all the answers at once. We are simply creating space to listen inward.
In yoga, meditation, Reiki, and energy work, the third eye invites us to soften the noise of the outside world so we can hear the wisdom that already lives within us.
What Is the Third Eye Chakra?
The third eye chakra is the sixth chakra in the energy body. It is located at the centre of the forehead, just above the space between the eyebrows.
This chakra is often associated with the colour indigo and is connected to our ability to see beyond the surface. Not in a dramatic way, but in a deeply intuitive way.
It is the part of us that notices.
It notices patterns.
It notices what feels right.
It notices when we are moving from fear instead of truth.
It notices when our body is trying to communicate with us.
It notices when we already know the answer, but we have been looking outside of ourselves for permission.
When the third eye chakra feels balanced, we may feel more connected to our intuition, more trusting of ourselves, and more open to seeing things with clarity. We may feel less pulled in every direction by outside opinions and more grounded in our own inner guidance.
Intuition Is Often Quiet
When people think of intuition, they sometimes imagine it as a big, loud message or a sudden flash of knowing. Sometimes it can feel that way, but often intuition is much softer.
It may feel like a calm yes.
A gentle no.
A sensation in the body.
A quiet pull toward something.
A feeling that you need to pause before making a decision.
A knowing that you need rest, space, or a different direction.
The challenge is that our minds can be very loud. Overthinking, fear, self-doubt, and the opinions of others can all make it harder to hear that inner voice. This is where yoga and meditation can be so supportive.
When we slow down, breathe, and come back into the body, we begin to quiet the mental noise. We do not need to push our thoughts away. We simply allow them to become background noise, while we gently turn our attention inward.
This is where the practice begins.
The Third Eye and Self-Trust
For me, the third eye chakra is not just about intuition. It is also about learning to trust yourself.
So many of us have been taught to look outside of ourselves for the answer. We ask everyone else what they think. We second guess our feelings. We ignore the small nudges within us because we are afraid of getting it wrong.
But self-trust is something we can slowly rebuild.
Each time we pause and listen, we strengthen that connection.
Each time we honour what we feel, we create more trust.
Each time we notice what is true for us, even quietly, we begin to come back home to ourselves.
The third eye chakra reminds us that wisdom is not always found through doing more, searching more, or thinking harder. Sometimes wisdom comes through stillness. Sometimes it comes when we finally stop trying to force the answer and allow ourselves to simply be present.
Signs the Third Eye Chakra May Feel Out of Balance
When the third eye chakra feels out of balance, you may notice it as overthinking, mental fog, self-doubt, or feeling disconnected from your intuition. You may find yourself asking everyone else what to do, even when deep down you already know what feels right.
You may feel stuck in your head, constantly analyzing, planning, or replaying situations. You may also feel disconnected from your inner world, your dreams, your creativity, or your sense of direction.
On the other hand, if this energy feels too ungrounded, you may feel scattered, spacey, or disconnected from the present moment.
This is why grounding is so important when working with the third eye chakra. We are not trying to float away from the body. We are learning how to listen inward while still feeling rooted, steady, and present.
Yoga Practices for the Third Eye Chakra
Yoga can help support the third eye chakra by creating quiet, focus, and inner awareness.
Some supportive postures may include:
-Child’s Pose, with the forehead resting on the mat or a block
-Seated Forward Fold, allowing the body to soften inward
-Easy Pose, with attention at the space between the eyebrows
-Supported Fish, to open the front body while staying grounded
-Legs Up the Wall, to calm the nervous system
-Savasana, to rest and receive
Forward folds can be especially supportive because they naturally draw the energy inward. They give us a chance to turn away from the outside world and listen to what is happening beneath the surface.
A simple practice could be placing a block under the forehead in Child’s Pose and breathing into the space between the eyebrows. You do not need to visualize anything perfectly. Just notice. Feel the breath. Soften the eyes. Let the forehead become heavy. Allow yourself to be supported.
Breathwork and Meditation for Inner Clarity
The third eye chakra is beautifully connected to meditation and breath awareness.
One simple practice is to sit or lie down comfortably and begin to notice the breath moving in and out through the nose. Feel the coolness of the inhale. Feel the warmth of the exhale. Let your attention rest gently at the space between the eyebrows.
You can silently repeat:
I trust my inner wisdom.
I allow myself to see clearly.
I listen to the quiet voice within me.
I do not need to force the answer.
I can pause. I can breathe. I can trust.
Even a few minutes of this practice can create a soft shift. The goal is not to empty the mind completely. The goal is to create enough space that you can hear yourself again.
Crystals for the Third Eye Chakra
Crystals can be a beautiful addition to a third eye chakra practice. You may choose to place one near your mat, hold one during meditation, or place one on your altar as a reminder to connect inward.
Some crystals often associated with the third eye chakra include:
-Amethyst for intuition, calm, and spiritual connection
-Lapis lazuli for inner truth and wisdom
-Clear quartz for clarity and energetic support
-Sodalite for insight, communication, and trust
You can use crystals in a very simple way. Hold one in your hand, set an intention, and allow it to be a physical reminder of the energy you are working with.
You may say:
May I trust what I feel.
May I see clearly.
May I listen inward with compassion.
As always, use what feels supportive to you. Your practice does not need to be complicated to be meaningful.
Reiki, Oracle Cards, and Intuitive Connection
Reiki can also be a gentle way to support the third eye chakra. Because Reiki invites the body and energy system into a state of rest and balance, it can help create space for clarity, reflection, and inner connection.
Sometimes when we are constantly busy, stressed, or overstimulated, it becomes harder to hear our intuition. Reiki gives the body permission to soften. It allows the mind to quiet. It creates a space where you can simply receive.
Oracle or tarot cards can also be used as part of a third eye chakra practice. Not to predict every detail of the future, but to reflect. To ask. To listen. To notice what comes up within you.
You might pull a card and ask:
What do I need to see clearly right now?
Where am I being invited to trust myself?
What inner wisdom am I ignoring?
What truth is ready to be acknowledged?
The card may offer a message, but your response to the card is just as important. Notice what you feel. Notice what stands out. Notice what you already knew.
Journaling Prompts for the Third Eye Chakra
Journaling is a beautiful way to work with this chakra because it helps bring inner wisdom onto the page.
Here are a few prompts you can explore:
-Where in my life am I being invited to trust myself more?
-What does my intuition feel like in my body?
-What truth have I been avoiding?
-Where am I overthinking instead of listening inward?
-What would I choose if I trusted myself fully?
-What do I already know, but have not allowed myself to accept?
Try not to overthink your answers. Let the words come out gently. You do not need to write perfectly. You are simply creating space for your inner voice to speak.
A Simple Third Eye Chakra Ritual
If you would like to connect with the third eye chakra, you can try this simple ritual.
Find a quiet space.
Light a candle if that feels good.
Place a crystal near you or hold one in your hand.
Sit comfortably or lie down.
Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breath.
Soften your forehead, your jaw, and the space around your eyes.
Imagine the breath creating space in the centre of your forehead.
Ask yourself:
What do I need to know right now?
Then pause.
You do not need to search for an answer. You do not need to force anything to happen. Just listen. Maybe something comes through right away. Maybe it does not. Either way, the practice is still working.
Sometimes the deepest wisdom comes when we stop demanding answers and simply make space to receive.
Coming Back to Your Inner Knowing
The third eye chakra reminds us that our inner wisdom is always available, but we have to slow down enough to hear it.
You do not need to be perfectly still.
You do not need to be deeply spiritual.
You do not need to have all the answers.
You only need to begin listening.
Through yoga, meditation, Reiki, crystals, journaling, and quiet reflection, we can create small moments of connection with ourselves. We can learn to soften the mental noise. We can learn to trust the gentle knowing that lives within us.
Your intuition does not need to shout to be valid.
Sometimes it whispers.
Sometimes it arrives as a feeling.
Sometimes it simply asks you to pause, breathe, and come back home to yourself.
And that is the beauty of the third eye chakra.
It invites us to see more clearly, trust more deeply, and remember that the wisdom we are searching for is often already within us.
