How to Use Crystals in Your Yoga or Meditation Practice
Crystals can be a beautiful way to bring intention, grounding, and ritual into your yoga or meditation practice.
You do not need to know everything about crystals to begin working with them. You do not need a huge collection or the “perfect” stone. Sometimes the simplest practice is the most meaningful. One crystal, one breath, one intention, one quiet moment with yourself.
For me, crystals are less about doing something complicated and more about creating a supportive energy around your practice. They can act as a gentle reminder of what you are calling in, what you are releasing, or how you want to feel when you step onto your mat.
Your crystal can become an anchor. Something you see, hold, or place nearby to remind you to come back to your breath, your body, and the present moment.
Begin With an Intention
Before using a crystal in your practice, take a moment to ask yourself:
What do I need today?
Maybe you need grounding. Maybe you need softness. Maybe you need courage, clarity, rest, protection, or self-compassion.
Once you have a word or feeling, you can choose a crystal that supports that energy. You can also choose the crystal you feel drawn to without overthinking it. Sometimes your intuition already knows what you need.
Hold the crystal in your hands, close your eyes, and take a few slow breaths. You might silently say:
“I welcome grounding.”
“I allow myself to soften.”
“I am safe to slow down.”
“I trust myself.”
“I return to my breath.”
Your intention does not need to be perfect. It just needs to feel honest.
Place a Crystal Near Your Mat
One of the easiest ways to use crystals in yoga is to place one near the top of your mat.
This creates a small energetic anchor for your practice. Every time you come to the top of your mat, move through child’s pose, or rest in stillness, the crystal can gently remind you of your intention.
For example, black tourmaline or smoky quartz can feel supportive for grounding and protection. Rose quartz can remind you to move with softness and compassion. Amethyst can support a more peaceful, intuitive practice. Clear quartz can be used when you want clarity or focus.
You can place your crystal at the front of your mat, beside a candle, near your blocks, or anywhere that feels special to you. It does not have to be fancy. It just has to feel intentional.
Hold a Crystal During Meditation
Holding a crystal during meditation can be a beautiful way to stay connected to the present moment.
You can hold it in one hand, between both palms, or rest it over your heart if you are lying down. Notice the weight, texture, temperature, and shape of the crystal. Let it become something your awareness can gently come back to when the mind wanders.
This can be especially helpful if sitting in meditation feels difficult. The crystal gives your hands something to feel and your mind something simple to return to.
Try this simple meditation:
Sit or lie down comfortably.
Hold your crystal in your hand or place it near your heart.
Close your eyes and take a few slow breaths.
Notice the feeling of the crystal against your skin.
With every inhale, imagine breathing in the energy you are calling in.
With every exhale, imagine softening anything you are ready to release.
Stay for a few minutes, or longer if it feels supportive.
When you are finished, pause and notice how you feel.
Use Crystals in Savasana
Savasana is such a beautiful time to work with crystals because the body is already in a state of receiving.
You might place a crystal beside your mat, near your heart, in your palm, or on your altar nearby. If you are placing a crystal on the body, keep it comfortable and safe. You want the crystal to support relaxation, not distract from it.
Rose quartz over the heart can feel nurturing.
Amethyst near the crown of the head can feel calming.
Smoky quartz near the feet can feel grounding.
Clear quartz nearby can support clarity and integration.
Let the crystal be a quiet reminder that you do not have to keep doing. You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to receive. You are allowed to simply be.
Create a Small Altar for Your Practice
An altar does not have to be religious or complicated. It can simply be a small space that holds meaning for you.
You might include a crystal, a candle, a flower, a photo, a journal, an oracle or tarot card, or a meaningful object from nature.
Your altar can sit near your yoga mat, meditation cushion, bedside table, or any quiet corner of your home.
Before you begin your practice, take a moment to look at your altar and connect to your intention. This helps shift your practice from something you are checking off your list into something that feels sacred and supportive.
Your altar can change with the seasons, the moon, your mood, or what you are moving through in life. Let it be simple. Let it be personal. Let it feel like you.
Pair Crystals With Specific Practices
Different crystals can support different intentions in your yoga or meditation practice.
For grounding practices, such as slow flow, yin, restorative yoga, or root chakra work, you might use black tourmaline, smoky quartz, hematite, or red jasper.
For heart-opening practices, you might use rose quartz, green aventurine, or rhodonite.
For calming practices, such as meditation, yoga nidra, or evening yoga, you might use amethyst, lepidolite, moonstone, or howlite.
For clarity, focus, or intention setting, you might use clear quartz, citrine, fluorite, or selenite.
You can also choose your crystal based on colour, feeling, or intuition. There is no wrong way to begin.
Cleansing Your Crystals
Before using a crystal in your yoga or meditation practice, you may like to cleanse it first.
Cleansing is a way of clearing the crystal energetically. This can be especially supportive when you first bring a crystal home, after using it in a deeper meditation, after Reiki, or anytime it feels like the crystal needs a reset.
You can cleanse your crystal in a few simple ways.
You can pass it through sage or palo santo smoke.
You can cleanse it with Reiki energy.
You can place it under running water, only if the crystal is safe in water.
You can hold it in your hands and set the intention to clear away anything it no longer needs to hold.
If you are using smoke, let the smoke gently move around the crystal as you set your intention. You might say:
“I cleanse this crystal of any energy it no longer needs to hold.”
If you are using Reiki, hold the crystal in your hands and allow Reiki energy to flow. You can imagine the crystal being surrounded by clear, peaceful light.
If you are using water, always check first that your crystal is water-safe. Some crystals can become damaged, dissolve, rust, or lose their finish in water.
The most important part is your intention. You are creating a small ritual of clearing, releasing, and beginning again.
Charging Your Crystals
After cleansing your crystals, you may also like to charge them.
Cleansing clears the crystal. Charging fills it with energy, intention, or the support you would like it to carry.
You can charge your crystals through sunlight, moonlight, or Reiki energy.
Some crystals love the sun. Some are better suited for moonlight. Some stones may fade or become damaged if left in direct sunlight for too long, so it is always helpful to check what is safe for the crystal you are working with.
Moonlight is one of the gentlest ways to charge crystals. You can place your crystals on a windowsill, outside in a safe place, or on your altar overnight.
The full moon can be beautiful for clearing, releasing, and recharging. The new moon can be supportive for setting fresh intentions and planting new energetic seeds.
Sunlight can be beautiful for charging crystals when you are calling in warmth, energy, confidence, motivation, joy, or vitality. If you are using sunlight, soft morning light can be a gentler option. Even a few minutes can be enough.
Reiki can also be used to charge crystals. Hold the crystal between your hands, take a few grounding breaths, and allow Reiki energy to flow into the stone. You might imagine the crystal being filled with light, warmth, or the specific energy you are calling in.
You might say:
“I charge this crystal with grounding and protection.”
“I charge this crystal with love and compassion.”
“I charge this crystal with clarity and peace.”
“May this crystal support my meditation practice.”
Reiki can be used to both cleanse and charge a crystal. It all depends on the intention you bring to the practice. You can use Reiki to clear the crystal first, then offer Reiki again with the intention of charging it with supportive energy.
A Simple Crystal Practice to Try
Choose one crystal that feels supportive today.
Sit or lie down comfortably.
Hold the crystal in your hands.
Close your eyes and take three slow breaths.
Ask yourself, “What do I need from my practice today?”
Let one word or phrase come forward.
Cleanse your crystal if you feel called to.
Charge your crystal with your intention, moonlight, sunlight, or Reiki energy.
Place the crystal near your mat or keep it with you during meditation.
Move, breathe, or rest with that intention in your heart.
At the end of your practice, hold the crystal again and notice how you feel.
You might even journal about what came up for you.
Let It Be Simple
Using crystals in your yoga or meditation practice does not have to be overwhelming. You do not need to memorize every meaning or follow a perfect ritual.
Start with one crystal.
Start with one intention.
Start with one quiet breath.
Let the crystal be a reminder to return to yourself. To slow down. To listen. To create a practice that feels supportive, grounded, and meaningful.
Your mat can become a place of movement, breath, energy, and connection. Your crystals can simply help you remember the energy you are choosing to bring with you.
And sometimes, that small reminder is enough.
